Town of Sodus and Wayne County Maps
Located at the corner of South Geneva Road and Lime Kiln Road in South Sodus, the Thornton Limekiln, built 1851, restored 1975 as a Bicentennial Project, Town of Sodus. A very rare structure, top fed process of lime making. The well was first filled with wood and reduced to hot coals. Lime rock was hauled from the quarry by horse up hill to the top of the well land dumped onto the hot coals. The melted lime was drawn off the bottom of the kiln.
It was demolished and removed when the S. Geneva Rd. and Lime Kiln Rd. intersection was redesigned about 2010.
